Where should you not swim on the Costa Blanca in 2026?

Where should you not swim on the Costa Blanca in 2026?

Good news first: Costa Blanca beaches are among the most closely monitored in Spain, and no closure is in force in the region as this is being written. The real summer risk lies elsewhere, in the embalses (dam reservoirs), inland rivers and the vast irrigation canal network of the Vega Baja, where swimming is sometimes expressly banned. Here is where not to jump in, and how to check before you go.

Are the beaches closely monitored?

On the coast, you can relax. The regional government (Generalitat) monitors 265 bathing areas listed in the region (250 sea beaches and 15 inland areas), with thousands of microbiological tests over the season and results within 24 hours: if something is off, an emergency protocol re-samples the water and can temporarily close the area, according to the regional water-quality control programme. Results beach by beach, from Denia to Pilar de la Horadada, are public on Nayade, the national bathing-water system run by the Ministry of Health. A useful habit after a heavy storm: wait 24 to 48 hours before swimming near the mouths of barrancos (seasonal ravines) and drainage outlets, until the test results confirm it is safe.

The real issue: reservoirs, rivers and canals

When the heat bears down on the coast, the temptation is strong to head for the turquoise inland reservoirs: Guadalest, Amadorio, Tibi, Beniarres. Remember the rule set out by the Jucar river basin authority (CHJ) in June 2026: swimming is expressly banned near a dam's outlet structures, as well as in canals, acequias and irrigation basins, where currents, sudden drops and submerged debris make the water treacherous. Maximum caution also applies downstream of hydroelectric plants, where flow can rise sharply without warning, even in fine weather.

A very Costa Blanca case: the Vega Baja irrigation network (the acequias and azarbes fed by the Segura river) is never a swimming spot, even when the water looks calm; it is precisely the kind of infrastructure the ban targets. And in the fashionable gorges and rock pools (the Barranco de la Encantada, various waterfalls), remember that outside official areas you swim at your own risk: no lifeguard, no water testing, and rock jumps that cause serious accidents every summer. The CHJ recommends sticking to official bathing areas, monitored and equipped, such as the Fonts de l'Algar.

The invisible enemy: algae and cyanobacteria

In stagnant, warm fresh water, blooms of algae and cyanobacteria can make swimming dangerous for people and dogs alike: the CHJ advises giving up on a swim as soon as the water shows an unusual colour or biological blooms of unknown origin. Opaque green water, a smell, foam: do not debate it, get out.

Where can you check before you dive in?

Three habits cover almost everything: Nayade (nayadeciudadano.sanidad.gob.es) for the official water quality of every listed area; the Generalitat's control programme (mediambient.gva.es) for seasonal results; and, on the spot, flags and signage, including dam ban notices, which override everything else. If in doubt about a cove or a rock pool, the local town hall is the most direct source.

For swim spots that check every box, see our day trips from the Costa Blanca (the Algar gorge tops the list), and a reminder of the right moves against jellyfish on the sea side.
