Vuelta 2026: Pogacar leads, Brennan wins stage 2

According to Eurosport and Brujulabike, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) won the opening 9.2 km individual time trial of the Vuelta a España 2026 in Monaco on 22 August, clocking 10 min 57.14 s and edging Britain's Ethan Hayter by just nine hundredths of a second, with Joshua Tarling third. Eurosport.es, drawing on the official stage report and ProCyclingStats, adds the general-classification detail: Primoz Roglic lost 22 seconds to Pogacar, Carlos Rodríguez 27 seconds and Enric Mas 33 seconds, so the Slovenian pulled on the first red leader's jersey of this edition.

Esciclismo.com sets the scene for the next day, describing stage 2 as the longest of the whole race: 214.3 km from Monaco to Manosque in France, with 3,028 m of climbing, two category-three ascents and a finish on a slight rise. Cyclingnews, following the action live, flags the day's only intermediate sprint at Gréoux-les-Bains, at km 179 and 35.3 km from the line, where Hayter came through ahead of Wout van Aert; by that mid-race checkpoint Van Aert had provisionally moved to within five seconds of the red jersey.

Vavel.com reports how it ended: a bunch sprint in Manosque won by the young Briton Matthew Brennan of Team Visma-Lease a Bike. ABC's sports desk frames the same stage more dramatically, billing it as a "duel of titans" between Pogacar and Van Aert, a sign of how tight the fight is shaping up for the podium places and the overall lead even this early.

One point the outlets do not fully settle: who wore red at the end of stage 2. A synthesis of the coverage suggests Pogacar kept the jersey by finishing third on the stage, yet that intermediate-sprint timing showed Hayter atop the standings with Van Aert at five seconds, so the definitive post-stage classification is worth checking against a primary source before you treat it as final. The story is trending in Spain today, as Google Trends shows, because the home Grand Tour has just begun and the general classification is already this closely bunched.
