Processions and brass bands: the Costa Blanca's endless calendar of fiestas
Back home, a parade is a rare event you note in the diary. On the Costa Blanca, it's almost a way of life. You turn a corner and run into a banda, drums, blazing costumes. The newcomer, startled at first, ends up watching for the next procession like a child.
The land of the bandas
The Valencian Community, which includes the province of Alicante, is THE home of the bandas de música (community wind bands). The regional federation gathers around 550 music societies, more than 1,100 bandas and over 40,000 musicians, more than half of all the bandas in Spain. These societies are listed as intangible cultural heritage. The moving part? They're amateurs, neighbours, children trained at the local music school, and yet the standard is superb. Every inland village and every coastal barrio has its band, and it accompanies absolutely every festival.
Festivals for every season
The Costa Blanca's calendar overflows with traditions, and many are lived out in the street:
- The Hogueres de Sant Joan (June, in Alicante): the capital's great festival, 20 to 24 June. Deafening mascletàs, ninots planted in the streets, and the cremà that sets the city ablaze on St John's night.
- The Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians): the province of Alicante is the world capital of it. Those of Alcoy (late April) are classed as a Festival of International Tourist Interest: the famous Trilogía Festera, sumptuous costumes, floats, horses and pasodobles. The festival re-enacts the battle of 1276 and is also staged at Villena, Elda and Cocentaina.
- The Misteri d'Elx (14 and 15 August, in Elche): a sung sacred drama from the Middle Ages, performed in the Basilica of Santa María. It was the first Spanish work inscribed on UNESCO's list of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. The night before, the Nit de l'Albà (13 August) sets the sky alight from the rooftops with thousands of rockets.
- Semana Santa (Holy Week): the one in Orihuela is a Festival of International Tourist Interest, among the most solemn of the Levante, as is that of Crevillent.
And the magic of the Three Kings
On 5 January, forget Father Christmas: here it's the Reyes Magos (the Three Kings) who light up children's eyes. The Cabalgata sweeps through the streets, illuminated floats, music and a rain of sweets thrown to the crowd. The one in Alcoy is reputed to be the oldest in Spain, a total wonder for a family newly settled here.
Why it moves us so much
What strikes the newcomer is the frequency and the ease of it all. The religious, the civic and the popular mingle without a second thought. Children parade in costume, grandparents applaud from the balcony, the band keeps the tempo. You're not watching a show: you're part of the party. And very soon you catch yourself checking the calendar so as not to miss a single procession.
